I'm going to the national conference tomorrow in Alexandria, LA. Just wondering how many PTers actually use this in their classroom.

I've experimented to try it out, but am just getting my feet wet. I really saw great results and my kids loved all of the responses and hand movements. When I didn't remember to use it they would do it themselves sometimes (especially the rules). I wish I could go!!!!

I am going to apply these rules with the motions into my classroom this year. What other things would be best for a 'newbie' to the Whole Brain approach? FWIW, I am looping to 4th grade with my students.

I also experimented with it this for the first time this year. This kids really liked the hand motions that helped them learn the class rules. Class/yes helps me get my class' attention so much better than the annoying "stand there with your hand up and wait for them to get quiet" thing or even "give me five" or clapping a rythm. I didn't really get them into class/teach this year and I was too inconsistent with the scoreboard for it to really be effective. "No guff" didn't work for me this year either. I had too many smart alecks that would act out on purpose just to make the class say no guff to them. Others would suddenly blurt out "no guff!" at inappropriate times just to be disruptive.

I'm definitely going to be on the website this summer to get more into it this year. I really like the concept of it. I would love to go to one of their conferences. There's been two in my area this year, but I wasn't able to go to either of them.

My kids loved the hand movements with the rules. I use the class/yes and class/teach.

I didn't try anything else, though. Looks like I'll need to review this during the summer.

imafive.....let us know what you learned at the conference. Have fun!

Wbt rocks!

I have used WBT in both first and fourth grades. I work in inner city schools where there tends to be more attention and discipline issues. To do WBT can take lots of energy, but the rewards are well worth it. I would much rather spend my energy encouraging enthusiastic engaging learning than disciplining students.

Noise level with WBT
Old 06-14-2010, 04:42 PM

What about the noise level? Any complaints from your neighboring classrooms? What do the other teachers think?

I have been in a "podded" room (open classroom) for the last 5 years. And even though I heard about WBT about 2 years ago I didn't try it because of the pod. This year I am moviing to my very own room with 4 whole walls!! I think I may give it a shot this year. I love how engaged the kids seem!

I am teaching our 10 day summer school this year and will have 9 students. I think I may use them as guinea pigs and get myself some practice!

I'm in the 2-5 group also! I am getting kind of tired of this...way to much review for me!! Today I was wearing a lime green "Louisiana College" t shirt and jeans. Tomorrow I'm wearing a "Montana Mud" shirt and jeans. Come up to me and say hi!!!

So nice to meet you!

It was great to meet you yesterday! I was sooo exhausted by the end of the conference and then drove 9 hours home. It was a great conference and I learned so much. I have used bits and pieces of this technique in my classroom already, but now that I know so much more about whole brain teaching I can't wait to use ALL of it in the classroom.

I have been learning about WBT through the website and videos on the web. It looks fantastic! I will be returning to the classroom after taking a 3 year break from teaching, so I am excited to try something new! I would love to hear your pros and cons of using it once the school year starts.

It was good to meet you too! I think I will be using everything but the writing program. Have you found yourself gesturing when you talk? Glad you had a safe trip back!
