Classroom Library

Clip to ScrapBook #1

So I've been hard at work today on my library. Separating, sorting, tossing, donating. All that's left is one box to sort, labeling bins/baskets, and organizing the stored books. Would appreciate any feedback you have.

You can view it at: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?s...7731a83&type=1

I'm thinking of putting a sign saying, "What would you like to learn about today?" above my informational text bookshelf.

Thanks!

Maybe put labels or stickers on your books. If you don't, they might get mixed up and put in different bins . Looks good! I love how much shelving you have for your books

Good reminder - Note to self: Buy some stickers!

I was blessed with lots of shelving, but unfortunately the green and blue bookshelves are kind of short so the books don't stand straight up. Had to improvise that way....

Thanks again for your comments!

That is a lot of work!!! A hint I read here a few years ago was to number each basket and put the number on the back of each book that belongs in that basket. Even my low readers can find the right basket to return the book. Just thought I'd pass the hint along.

I am making a "Book Hospital" bin so when the students find a book that needs repair they can put it in that bin. Keeps them from interrupting small groups.

I get wooden paint stirrers....most places will give you them for free. I spray paint them. I put on each child's name and decorate it. They put it in the space they took a book from.

This is the cutest book hospital label I have seen...made it already.

I love all the ideas for organizing the classroom library. AlohaJenn, your library looks supreme! I wish I could get mine to look like that. (Moving from one grade to another doesn't make it easy. I always seem to be adjusting the level of books, let alone labels...)

Thank you for the Book Hospital idea. Love it! I'll be using that one this year. They do get a little upset with damaged books. I treat all my books as my own, some of them are, and I try to teach the same attitude to the students. I want to have my books for a while.

That looks awesome! I am revamping my library his year but I don't have those awesome shelves like you do!

I LOVE the book hospital idea. LOVE LOVE LOVE. I run my reading groups at the same time Independent Reading is going on, and kids are forever interrupting to tell me the book ripped. I am so going to do this!

I love the idea of a book hospital! Definitely adding that to my classroom library! I also love all of the shelves the first poster had! Wish I had that much shelving! It's so colorful too, which I love!

I, too, love the hospital idea. Will definitely find a place for that. I have to thank my wonderful husband for painting my bookshelves a couple of years ago. They were white before and always got dirty. Gonna have to repaint again soon, though. The paint is peeling in some areas.

Thanks for all of your nice compliments and ideas!

Your library is off to a great start!! I love your color-coded baskets! Someday I'd like to do this according to genre. For now, all of my baskets are the same color. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for sharing your pictures! I need to clean out my library too. I am thinking about numbering my baskets a la the Sisters...that way students can put books back easier.

Each basket has a number (for example Frogs would be #1 for example) and all frog books would have a #1 book on a sticker on the book.

Tell me more about your reading buddies...I am thinking about using reading buddies...how does it work in your room?

Looks good! I spent three days this summer doing the exact same thing. I ended up going with stickers to label my books and then attached the title of the group and the sticker that matched to the basket. My only advice if you do stickers is buy lots and a large variety!! It is amazing how quickly they are used. I did use some of the circle, garage sale dots behind the stickers to add another variety to the mix.

book tubs and labels

Your library looks awesome! Where did you get your different tubs for books? My labels don't end up sticking long to the baskets that I have. I also tried a label connected to a small ring attached to my basket, those also got ripped off. Any good ideas for connecting lables or types of baskets to use?

I added more pictures! You can take a sneak peek the rest of my classroom.

Thanks for all your compliments! I inherited all my baskets with the exception of the "hole-y" ones. I tried to put all the similar ones together and it just worked out that way!!! Hooray!

I planning to use laminated signs for labels and attach with clear packing tape. It worked in the past.

So just labels and stickers and the library is done.
