What is the one thing you would say is the BEST THING EVER in your classroom? Resource, book, management idea, routine, etc...

I'm new to third grade and have quickly realized I really need to learn more about this grade level. What item/idea/resource would you recommend as the BEST EVER??

I love Xtra math too! I think using numbers for my kids makes my life easier. I also love having a Promethean board in my class. Having lots of children books in the classroom is also great too. I also love having individual dry erase boards because you can use them for so many different things in the classroom.

I would say that the best thing would be the book, Comprehension Connections by Tanny McGregor. It is a great way to teach reading strategies in a hands on way: hands on for reading, go figure!

My next best would be the task cards that I found right here on PT! I like to put a label on the back with the answer before I laminate so it becomes a self checking activity. Just today, I used them in math and it gave some students who finished a bit early, a chance for extra practice. The students actually see it as a game and they love it

LOVE 3rd Grade!

Stickers! Kids love to get them- good behavior, handing in homework, caught being good, working quietly, etc.

Assign them #s. Next to their name they always write their number. I number my kids alphabetically so it makes alphabetizing the papers to enter in my grade book much easier :-) Also makes transitions fun- all odd # line up, even # check your mailboxes, if you are a multiple of 3 stand up, etc.

Popsicle sticks with each kids name on it in (I hold in a crystal light container wrapped in nice wrapping paper). I use for participation and calling on random students to help, make choices, or do something in class.

A touch bell. I use when kids are actively engaged and I need to give directions or ask to quiet down. One tap and all eyes on teacher. We practice the first week of school all the time.

"Give me 5" Poster. 1. Sitting properly. 2. Bodies are still. 3. Quiet hands. 4. Mouths are closed. 5. Eyes on speaker.

Anything class list. I type my class list in one column and make tons of copies of it. I used them for class check lists. For homework, Kids cross their names off as they hand it in. Then I know who didn't hand it in. Also great to use when have to hand in forms for office, bring in supplies, etc.

Pattern Blocks, Unifix cubes for Math, playing cards and dice.

Rocks and Mineral samples, and tons of nonfiction books on animals, habitats, plants, the skeleton, solar system for Science.

ISPY books.

Fun with Words books- Brian Cleary series, Ruth Heller books, and Punctuation Takes a Vacation. Great for quick grammar minilessons.

Proteacher has amazing Task Cards I just found yesterday!! Love them.

Feel free to PM me if you think I can help in any way!

I used these too until I found an app for my phone that will randomly call kids names. If you have an ipod or ipad there is a great one on there too.
