Letters

Clip to ScrapBook #2

We do a lot of Thanksgiving Day activities. We are out a whole week for Thanksgiving break. So, I do Thanksgiving activities for a whole week.
In English, we work on writing a letter. We go over the parts of a letter and I read Dear Mrs. LaRue. Then, we write a letter to our parents telling them why we are thankful for them. We brainstorm reasons as a class first and then talk about how to be more detailed. They turn out really, really cute. I think parents enjoy reading them too! We spend one day writing, the next revising, then editing, then publishing!
For Social Studies, we watch videos from scholastic .com (without space). Then we compare and contrast the Native Americans and the pilgrims using a venn diagram. We watch the webcast and write facts from what we hear (good note taking practice) and discuss them as a class. I created a test to go along with the facts.
In Reading, we read a reader's theater I found online at timelesstheacherstuff .com. It is the ABC's of the First Thanksgiving. We practice and make signs for our letter. They practice fluency and we discuss the information. I also created a test over the information in the reader's theater and they perform it for me (as a fluency and expression grade).
We also make cute little turkeys and make them hold a sign "What I am thankful for" and then they write things they are thankful for on the feathers.
In Math, we are finishing our chapter on graphing, so we make some class graphs about Thanksgiving!
I hope this helps

So far we have done Synonym and Antonym Tukeys...we are doing a whole class bulletin board with a LARGE turkey and everyone in the class is tracing/cutting out their hand and we will discuss what we are grateful/thankful for and they will choose five things to write on each finger. I am doing a Venn Diagram with the book/movie of Molly's Pilgrim. I know Scholastic has a cool interactive Mayflower activity that we will do during our computer lab time. That is it so far...I am looking for more ideas too!

Oreo Turkeys

We always make Oreo Turkeys and write How-to's to go with them. I demonstrate how to make the turkey. Then I pass out baggies with all the supplies (minus the frosting) and the students have to recreate the Oreo Turkey while writing the instructions. They love this! They can then take them home and try to have someone make it using their directions. I have attached the original instructions with a picture so you can see what I am talking about. Hope this helps!

Thanksgiving Math

I wrote these problems a few year ago. Each year I change the names to those of my current students. For some reason if their names are in the problems they don't seem to mind the work. Who knew?

Happy Thanksgiving

Antonym and Synonym turkeys
Old 11-17-2011, 02:13 PM

Clip to ScrapBook #14

I split my class in half and assigned one half antonyms and the other half synonyms. I did a quick mini lesson on what is an antonym and synonym and showed how to find each in the dictionary. Then I had a worksheet that each student had to pick a word and then write 5 antonyns or snonyms. Antonyms were harder, so I actually looked those up ahead and assigned those words to students. The kids that were assigned snonyms got to pick any word in the thesarus that they wanted to. Then we made turkeys...they put their word on the Turkey belly and the synonyms or antonyms for that word were on each feather. They turned out really cute! I hope I explained that ok for you1

This is a great idea. I was searching ideas about how to make Oreo Turkeys. I like the idea of the kids writing their own instructions. Great idea! Thanks again!
