I'm looking to incorporate literature circles next year in my fourth grade classroom. I'm curious as to how to assess students! Do you use self assessments/rubrics only? Do you assess on the work they complete in the groups? Do any of you assess using a pen/paper test on comprehension of the story?

I do not give pen/paper test. I assign roles to the student. Each role being different during each meeting. So the roles have a work sheet to be filled out at home after the required reading is done. As the discussions are going on i walk around to each group with a clip board and write down important observation. When the groups are finished reading the entire book, i collect the "role sheets" and I have the students write reflections on how the group meetings went and sometimes a summary of the book if i did not gather enough information.

I did literature groups and story maps for the last month of school. It was kinda crazy in my room when you walked in there since my kids were all doing group work and partner work all over the floor and desks. I wish I had taken a picture of my room. ! I made a 6-7 page packet for the Lit circle students if you are interested in a copy. I didn't use a rubric. I just gave them a grade, A,B,C or D. But I'm sure a rubric can easily be made. I also gave some simple quiz's over a couple/few chapters at a time.

Bolend, I'd love to take a look at your lit groups packet, if you wouldn't mind sharing!

I think I can only post one page at a time, so here it goes.
Actually, I only had 5 pages plus a title page. But I don't have that on my home computer. Sorry! I must have made that page at school.

I also don't think they need to be in any special order either.

I hope this helps out. Feel free to edit the pages as needed. I originally found a Lit group paper on the site somewhere. But I changed it to what I needed for my class.
If you have any questions, let me know.

Sorry about the cover page. I must have made that at school.
