Are you required to teach Constitution Day?

If I were required to teach Constitution Day I would probably focus on the 19th Amendment guaranteeing women the right to vote. First graders will be totally amazed by this (that women couldn't always vote) and there is a great read aloud too:

Maybe you have inspired me to do Constitution Day this year! I have always thought it was sort of silly (though I love the Constitution and do teach it to first graders). Hummm....

signed my name then they all signed their name. My Social Studies Wall has nothing yet but I thought what a great intro to the beginning of our nation-signing an agreement. We should work it in whether it's a standard or not. If we don't teach them who will? Some of our parents don't even say the pledge with us in the school-wide morning meeting!

I always read "We the Kids" It is the preamble with pictures that help explain in kids terms. I also focus on American symbols. We make a flag a talk about what each part represents. Other symbols we discuss are the statue of liberty, the white house, the pledge, the national anthem... I have a printable mini book that I think came from Abcteach. It is at school in my filing cabinet.
