Vocabulary Idea Help

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I am working with a fifth grade student who seems to be struggling with vocabulary. I am starting an LEA project with her and talking about the vocabulary found in the pictures of the wordless book. Does anyone have any other suggestions to help a struggling reading with vocabulary? I'm hoping the LEA will be a good exercise, but are there any strategies that I can teach her or resources that may be helpful?

Read Read Read is my suggestion.

They need to read every day. They can write words they need to understand better in a vocab journal. Then look them up in the dictionary and define. Conference with each child about their new words.

Read aloud to them. Discuss word choice. Preteach vocabulary for each day's reading.

Teach vocabulary from science, social studies and math. Do dictionary activities, define, matching, crosswords, multiple choice.....

I like this website.

I like read write and think for making crossword puzzles.

Thank you! I enjoyed those websites and I think my reader did as well! I used a crossword and a matching worksheet with her for the tutoring session. I love readwritethink.org. It's such a great resource! I may try to do more vocabulary activities with her LEA project.
