I teach in a small rural community (700 people) in South Dakota. We have one classroom for each grade. Next year I will have 15. Last year I had 20 and the year after next I will have 29. We have never split a class so far since I have been here (21 years) as we don't have another room for them. So I get them all-large or small.

So far, I hear I will have 26, but we haven't even had new student registration yet. With budget cuts, we lost a teacher. I'm starting out overcrowded.

It is currently at 16 students (but school doesn't begin until Aug. 22nd) so I'm sure that's subject to change... 16/17 was the norm last year though so I remain optimistic!
My old school (same city) I had anywhere form 23-26 students at any given time... so we'll see!
... The norm for Jax is in the mid/mid-high 20's though... so if I get the project 16 I'll be SO HAPPY!

I teach in a small rural community in Ohio. We average 20-25 with 3 teachers. Due to budget cuts and changing legislation, I don't think we have a true legal limit on class size now. We had one teacher retire this year, and her position was filled by moving staff around so we still have 3 teachers. I don't think any new teachers will be hired this year. Our legal room occupancy is 40! Yikes! Hope we never go to 2 teachers. I don't know where we would put them. I have 25 desks and my room is already crowded.

This is a pet peeve of mine, however. I am a firm believer in smaller classes especially with so many students coming into classrooms today with special needs (autism, down syndrome, etc.), learning disorders, physical handicaps, ADHD, and other behavior issues (conduct disorders, etc.). All IEP students are usually in one class which is supposed to be smaller, but because we have so many of these students, it usually ends up being the largest class in the grade level. It is hard to differentiate and meet all of their needs adequately with a small class. It is almost impossible to be truly effective with a large class.

I am curious as to why you asked this question!

I had 19 kids last year. I think I have 17 so far for the new year. Registration is in early August. The Texas state limit is 22 per class in grades k-2. (I teach first grade in Austin, TX.) Our legislature was going to increase the limit, but they left it alone. They just reduced the education budget by $4 BILLION dollars instead.

I am sill waiting for our Prin. to decide if we will have 2 or 3 rooms. Our numbers right now stand at 26 for 2 rooms. Praying she will do 3 rooms of 17. We are getting a new reading series that is very intensive and I want to teach reading in the morning. If we stay 26 we will have to do all reading/phonics work in the PM. By the way I teach at a Catholic school in Chicago.

ABC123evr-Do you have a helper with that large class size? How many small groups do you have for reading?

YIKES! After reading all of the numbers in so many classes I feel sooo fortunate to have only 18. So far, Florida public schools are still under a constitutional amendment capping primary grades at 18. There is another push to put this back to the voters to abolish the amendment. It failed last year, so here's hoping it will fail again. We need those small numbers in our classrooms!

small private school. 1 class per grade level.

last year had 20: 13 boys; 7 girls

This year it's looking around 20 as well, but a bit more balanced between the boys and the girls. Hoping to gain a few more to help our school budget!

Last year I had 18 for most of the year. So far for next year I have 33. The cap is at 35. Most of them are English Language Learners. There is no aide and hardly any parent support. It could be a very difficult year.

Our school has 32 languages, 6 first grades, we are suppose to get 20 or above. Last year had 20. We are a title one school and don't get much parental support because of the crazy shifts they work. We are finding little discipline at home that shows up in class. Each year is pretty rough in the classroom management area. Our test scores are low and could use some aides!

I've found the variation around the country so interesting. I've taught 1st for 31 years.
We used to have smaller sizes in k-2. I've had as few as 16 (once). I've had 27 the last 3 years. We do not have aides in classrooms here.

Lucky for me, my DH is retired and he volunteers each day for 3 hours during reader's and writer's workshop to listen to kids read and assist during writing. My students love reading to him. We also used special money from the state (compensatory aid based on % free/reduced lunch) to have 1 aide for 6 rooms to share.

Forgive me for not putting in the actual city (it's small and I don''t want to out myself )

I'm slated for 25 plus a student from the CI program that will be in and out. My max, per contract is 26. If I am over they give me an extra assessment day each quarter or something similar. Generally, no additional help during the day.

Connecticut - I have had as few as 18, and as many as 26. Each year, I usually end up with around 23 kids. I agree that smaller class sizes are NECESSARY at this crucial age!

I am a first time teacher in a small public charter school in a small rural town in northern California & I will be in a K/1 class with at least 20 & the cut off is 24 so people can continue to sign up after school starts...but I really hope it doesn't go higher than 20 because my room has the potential to fit 20 comfortably & we all know what happens if it's too crowded especially with the younger ones
