I'm getting 26 (that I know of...sometimes we get a few after the year starts). I've NEVER had that many firsties. I've had 27+ 3rd and 5th graders, but this many first graders has me really nervous!!

What can you accomplish with 26+ kids in a 1st grade room???? Absolutely ridiculous! I currently have 21 and we usually get a few as school starts too. My first 2 years we had 18 and that was great! In my ideal world, we'd all have 14/15 in a class!

I have 24 and it is the most we have ever had. YOu just can't work your first grade magic with that many. I am nervous too. I start tomorrow.

I have 21 on my list right now. The 'rule' is that we aren't supposed to have more than 18 in the primary grades but they won't actually do anything about it til we reach 28. Absolutely crazy! I don't think our system has enough money to do anything like hire another teacher anyway. We're pretty much stuck with whatever we get.

I have 24 on my roster. Tomorrow is the first day, so we'll see who actually shows. However, in the past I've had 29 on my list. So 24 is kind of nice!

We have 3 sections and are currently at 19,19,18.

We still have 2 weeks before school begins so they could change.

exactly yet. I will find out tomorrow. However from the registration this week it looks looks like we will have 14-15 with a possible 16 during the year. Our school keeps first under 20 so we are very lucky.

For those of you who have over 20: Do you have paras to help you? I can't imagine trying to teach that many without help.

23 is suppose to be our "limit" but typically have 24... we have no such thing as a para here unless you're the inclusion class then you "might" have the para instead of the LS teacher. But even as the inclusion classroom that's a long shot to see the LS teacher for "co-teaching" or the para.

I've got 25. That's plenty. I've had many more students when I taught 4th grade, but at least there you can assign work and maybe have 60 seconds without an accident a nosebleed, someone falling out of a chair, someone eating playdough, someone crying or, lest I forget, someone not understanding the directions.
Don't get me wrong, it's my favorite grade to teach for many reasons, but I can't understand the logic in having 25 or more students, 1 teacher and no aid in a first grade classroom. So very much needs to be learned in a very short year and no success in the future awaits these kids without a very sound first grade experience.
Just sayin.... Janice

on my current roster. School starts in one week and we ALWAYS get a few on the first day. I usually get a few throughout the year as well. I'm predicting I'll be around 24 or 25...with a tiny room and not enough workbooks or chairs for everyone. Yay!

I also have 21 as of last Friday. I start tomorrow and the students start Thursday. Like Stonesoup, I'm curious if the teachers who posted high numbers have paras to help them. I don't have one, but I've never had over 22 students (but I think that's too many!).

We are currently at 25/26, but the numbers are REALLY low in Kindergarten, so we may get a teacher moved up to First to help get numbers down.

I've done 28 in Kindergarten and its not fun, but possible. You have to run a tight ship with very little room for negative behavior. You also have to be VERY organized and recruit parents to help however they can.

Wonder Why?

they say our students are struggling in school?
I can't imagine in my wildest dreams having more than 20 in a first grade classroom without a para (aide). (I did have 21 in my reading group once, but...they were the higher ability students.) It is INSANE to expect even the very best teacher to be able to meet the multiple needs of students in large classrooms.
I am so thankful that my district and especially my principals support the research that shows if a student isn't on grade level by the end of first grade it takes intensive, expensive intervention to help them reach that goal. I am thankful that they realize how important small first grade classrooms can give more individual attention to ALL groups (from low ability to high ability).
I ADMIRE you all facing the school year with large classrooms. I know that you will all be putting in a lot of extra hard work and hours to provide the very best education for your first graders. God Bless You and have a great year!
P.S. Note to Self: When my 15 little munchkins are driving me up a wall, remember this thread!!!

Our principal will not release our class list or numbers until the Wednesday of preservice week. It is a pain because then you only have a day and a half to get all their names written on everything! She has even sent out a reminder email not to harass our simms admin assistant because it puts her in an uncomfortable position. Our team leader went up and talked with her and it seemed that we were sitting at 27 kids. I have never had that many kid and I am scared as this is only my 2nd year in 1st but I guess if I can handle 22 Kindergarteners then I can do this!!! Fingers crossed!!!

We have 7 first grades with 16 - 17 in each class. We may get in a few more...but I feel sorry for anyone over 20-way too many! My first year I had 26 and it was ridiculous-finally our board of ed. took notice of the importance of small class size in k-2.

Right now it looks like I will have 19 on my class list and then 16 for my literacy block. We have a home room for math, science, social studies, specials, etc. And then for our literacy block we each have a few students (random abilities) go to an additional literacy class to lower out class sizes for the literacy block. Our districts goal is to keep the literacy classes under 18. I can't remember a time when I have had lower than the 18.

K ended with 79 total last year. There are 4 of us in first, so that makes 20/20/20/19. We don't get our class lists till next week, Monday hopefully. Our campus population changes a lot, many move out and in. So who knows. All we can do is estimate right now on our numbers of K from last year. Last year I had 18, and had 1 more join me after the Christmas break, so I ended the year with 19. I really only have room for 20, then I would have to get creative in my little, tiny room =)

Bless the poster with 30!

As of right now, I have 13...i teach at a private school and we keep our numbers low. Both of us first grade teachers have the same amount of firsties. When I was in public school teaching kindergarten, I would have between 25 and 30. I don't miss those days!

Our first day of school is tomorrow.

I have 34 on roll and I know I will be getting 2 additional kids from self-contained special ed rooms for math and reading.

Yes, this is way over our legal limit (cap is supposed to be 28) but we were told to wait and see how many actually show up...I am hoping they all do so we can do class size reduction!!

Last year I had 27 at the beginning of the year and I thought that was crazy...but this year takes the cake.

Right now I have 20 or 21. My first year I had 45 (long ago), so 20 doesn't seem that bad!

Right now I have 25. I could get more before school starts or even on the first day of school. I could have had as many as 28 in first grade. I'm lucky my daughter helps out ever morning for one on one reading with the kidos.

This year I only have 17 students - but I teach in a Catholic School and our class sizes seem to be smaller most of the time

I have 21. My class list has changed 3 times. I started at 21, lost 2, then added 2 at late registration. We have 5 sections of first grade.

Same here visionary... I had 25 last year and as of now my list is at 18! Wow! But there's still 3.5 weeks until the first day, so I'm sure at least one more will find their way onto my list before then.

I have 21 and that is our maximum. Our province has slowly reduced class sizes over the past few years.

I have 24 but could go to 26 or higher...I won't complain as I see some have 31 or 34 students in their class. Yikes!

Last year I had 23 charming darlings, but this year I have 21. Two of which are in Special Ed, three were hand placed in my class because of behavior problems, and many are struggling readers. Although I think it would be nice to have an aide, we typically do just fine without them.

Good luck to the teacher with 30!

I had a discussion with my principal the other day as she was trying to order some books for us and found out that she's planning on 35 little ones for my class this year. Last year I only had 17. I'm already missing those days!

I will be praying for all of you who have such huge classes.....I student taught with 27 in a K5 class and I swear the student teachers were there to avoid having to hire aides....To have to teach 25+ firsties without an aide is pure insanity. I teach at a small Christian school, right now I have 8. It would be great to have more, but we are still working on growing our school. Maybe one day...
