New to Fifth

Hello everyone here! I was just switched out of my third grade class into fifth at my request. I have a student teacher who has already been long term subbing in the class so the class seems to be well underway. This arrangement will eventually free me up to do others things that I already do in our school. Well that is the goal anyway.
I left my class in good hands with a current third grade teacher who is coming from another school.
I have had a wonderful experience on PT with the third grade board and I can see the fifth grade board is active as well.
Any pointers for my first fay on Wednesday? I have already had some of these students in third but I was wondering what growth beside attitude will I see.
Thanks!

Just curious...
You're moving over to a different grade level after the school year has started and the class you're moving into has a student teacher? That sounds like a lot to deal with.

Are you not a self-contained teacher but an intervention specialist or part of a co-teaching situation? Is that how you are able to move so easily and do other things during the school day?

Sorry for all the questions, but I'm really curious. If it's personal, then just say it's none of my business.

I would think that the first thing you'll want to do is focus on re-introducing yourself and the expectations you have and will have once the student teacher is gone. I think that would be difficult for the students to go from one classroom teacher (the original cooperating teacher) to a student teacher then on to another teacher (you) for the remainder of the year. You're going to have to really hit on your expectations when you get back in the "saddle" because 5th graders may try to test you to see what you will tolerate compared to what their other teachers did.

Probably a big difference you will see will be the improvement in their writing skills and the ability to explain their thoughts in writing--at least for most of them. They do start to test the boundaries of the rules more at this age, but from the experiences I've had with my 5th graders, they have a good sense of humor and still want to please the teacher.

I am currently a third grade teacher and we picked up a third grade teacher in surplus so instead of moving my student teacher down to third (she has been a long term sub in the same fifth) I am moving up to her class and my class is being taken by the surplus teacher.

The hope is that she will become their permanent teacher after January when she completes her student teaching and I will move into a floating teacher position til the end of the year. The floating teacher is now a long term sub.
There is a possibility I will stay in fifth next year.
Doing count day so late in the year really adds a lot of stress but that is how we picked up extra teaching positions.

Wow! Now that makes my head spin! Well, hopefully, you'll get to stay in fifth. I'm sure you'll love it. I went from 2nd to 5th 9 years ago and would not want to go back. The curriculum is interesting, too.
