We make shape monsters.

I make about 4 or 5 different variations so that all of the monsters don't look the same, but here is an example-

3 circles
7 squares
2 rectangles
1 oval
4 trapezoids

And the students use those directions to draw any type of monster they like as long as it follows their guidelines.

I have my students march/hop/walk in a square, circle, triangle shape. Use masking tape to make the shapes on the floor and students can move around the shape and tell how many sides and corners.

My students use mini marshmallows and toothpicks to create shape models of a trapezoid, parallelogram, hexagon, etc. They truly enjoy the activity and then when they are finished and I've checked their work they can eat their shape models.

I wrote this for my third graders. Maybe you can use some of it with your first graders.
