Anyone have anything cool for teaching dependent and independent variables?

Unfolding Flowers

I use a cut out of a paper flower that has 5 petals. Students fold the petals inward and then float it in a container of water. They use stop watches and determine how long it takes to open. We do several trials, average the results and discuss how to control the experiment and what the variables are. Then students select another variable to test, such as number of petals, kind of paper or temperture of water and do further tests, always using time as the dependent variable. It helps them understand the science process.
