Gotta have a sub the next to last day of school

A dear sweet lady in our church passed away last night. She had been sick for a long time and already had her funeral plans made. She had asked me to sing at her funeral, which is now scheduled for this Thursday at 11:00. Friday is the last day of school. I hate the thought of trying to tell a sub what I want them to do the next to the last day of school.🤯

Good luck getting someone!

Sorry for your loss. I am glad that you are able to go and celebrate her life for her.

I used to sub while I was finishing up some classes before student teaching and I had a favorite 3rd grade teacher that used me all the time. I subbed for her the next to the last day of school. The morning they had normal specials and some fun reading and math activities. Then after lunch the kids and I cleaned out their desks and put their things in bags to take home. We did shaving cream to clean the desks, so fun! We moved desks to the side of room for summer carpet cleaning. We went outside and did shaving cream art with food color. It made swirls on the paper. When the kids were gone to specials I took things down for her and packed them. It helped that I knew her room and her. I hope you can find someone good and that subs because they like kids. That makes a big difference.

It's an absolutely legitimate reason to take off!

As a sub who doesn't normally work the last week of school, I definitely would if I got a call explaining that.

Talk to your sub coordinator, and I'm sure she'll be able to find someone who can handle it.

If I could teleport to where you are, Iíd sub for you that day. Iím subbing Mon-Wed of the last week of school, and itís not a big deal. At that point, itís mostly just keeping the kids entertained, and we get to do some fun learning things.

Donít give it a second thought about taking the day so that you can honor one of this ladyís final wishes. As I always like to say, ďNo one is going to burst into flames if youíre not at school that day, and if they do? Welp, you wonít have to worry about them anymoreĒ.

Go and celebrate this sweet lady with your beautiful voice.

Go and honor that sweet lady. The school will still be there.
Hopefully, you will find an experience sub and can survive the day.

And some things are more important than being in school. If it's bothering you, maybe you can arrange some sort of in-house coverage for your class so you can be at the funeral for a couple of hours and then return to school?

Everyone will be fine. I have subbed the last day of school more than once. Work on closure a day early. Enjoy singing. What song will you sing?
