no preps this week

Our site has an unholy combination of off-campus teacher training, testing, stomach flu, and a sub shortage this week.. Admin has generously allowed teachers to keep their prep period by sacrificing the special teachers' preps. All of our preps have been filled with other teachers' classes, sometimes with an additional class split among us.

Not only do I lose my prep period and have to teach non-stop all day, but I have to pay for it by working late after school to get all the other stuff done. Thirty minutes of lunch is not enough. So all the other teachers are getting things ready for the end of the year (two weeks away) while I'm babysitting their class.

Sorry that they are treating you so disrespectfully. If it were me, I'd put on a movie during whatever the extra class is and get my work done.

That certainly wouldn't be allowed in my school system. The union has guidelines that specify the weekly planning time all teachers must receive.

Do you have a union rep that you can talk to about this?

What they do where I sub is to assign subs coverages first, then ask for volunteers from the teaching staff and, then coverages are assigned by the principal.

They sure are raking you over the coals for your last year there.

When I would lose a prep period I made it a quite time for kids to have free time for the 45 minutes of the prep.

I hope you are compensated at least a small amount for taking the extra students during your time. In my district, we were not guaranteed a prep every day but if there wasn't coverage for our class during a special, the school secretary put in a form and we received a small extra amount on our paycheck. I think it might be time to take a mental health day if you could get your work done at home without having to take care of the classes of others.

Our preps aren't guaranteed either in my district. We're just compensated if they're taken away.
