One of my colleagues did this last year: Give the kids a black outline map of the Tigris/Euphrates area (or have the kids draw one themselves), the kids used watercolor pencils to color the rivers blue and the land around them yellow. Then using water and a paintbrush they went over the yellow and blue, which of course did sort of run together to make ta-da green inside the Fertile Crescent.

Thank you both for your responses! I love the travel brochures! Very cute project idea. I think the watercolor idea is cute, too. I think I can actually use both projects in my class -- the map when I introduce it, and the travel brochure as an end of unit project. Thanks!!

Check Mr. Donn's ancient history site, there are some great ideas. You can make the cylinder seals out of clay, which is fun. Also, there is a sitre about Hammurabi's code, I will try to find it.

I had the kids make a salt dough recipe, then use toothpicks to write their name in cuneiform (not an easy task!). The kids love it! Later, when we study Egypt I have them write their names in hieroglyphics, and again in Greek.
