Vocabulary for SS

I want to do more with my unit vocabulary than just have students copy definitions. I know about lots of vocabulary options but I'm trying to get an idea of what you guys do? My kids are 6th, 7th, & 8th grade and we do all our work in interactive notebooks. I give them the vocabulary words at the beginning of each unit and usually give them 2-3 weeks to complete before I grade them.

Suggestions? How do you guys do vocabulary words for SS?

SS Vocabulary

Some of my vocabulary lists are from SS. I give a list of ten words each Monday. They staple this into their spiral and i introduce the words briefly. Then I give them flash cards. Some have just the vocab word and others have just the definition. The students have to match up the correct definition to the correct word and paste them side by side in their spirals. This becomes their study guide. I also have extra copies of these cards to use in a center. They can match them up or play Concentration with them. Then on Tuesday I give them a crossword puzzle that uses the words. The clues are the same definitions on the flash cards. On Wednesday students use each word in their own sentences. I check their sentences to make sure they have used the words correctly. Then Thursday we play a game called SWAT to review the vocabulary. Then on Friday I give them an assessment. It is fill in the blank sentences. They use their list as their word bank. I will attach one of my SS units. This is for third grade, but maybe something I have will still be useful to you and your students.

Sorry I published the fill in the blank assessment and list in Appleworks. I can't attach it here on PT. Here is the SWAT game. You can make your own game, but I bought one on sale from Really Good Stuff for $5.99. It comes with magnetic bugs to hold the word or definition cards up on the board.
