Hi,
I'm from Germany and teach English to 5-6 years old children in kindergarten. I know what ESL means, but I couldn't find LEP in all dictionaries I know. Could anybody be so kind and explain it to me, please?

Thanks in advance.

You might mean IEP. An IEP is an Individual Education Plan that is developed for students in Special Education. After academic and psychological testing, the scores are used to determine if a student qualifies. If so, and IEP is written and this is also a lawful document. Evey SPED student must have one to be considered Special Ed. I hope that helps.

Limited English Proficient - a term to discribe anyone who has tested into an ESL (or ESOL) program. Usuall, in the case of children in public schools, parents fill out a Home Language Survey. If the parent indicates a 2nd (or 3rd) language is spoken at home, then the child is given some kind of language asscessment to determine if ESL services or support is needed. If the child, in fact, soes need ESL then he or she is classified as LEP.

This is a probably the best explanation for LEP that I've heard. It is difficult at times because there are so many abbreviations in everyday use instead of the actual use of words. I was hired as a new ESL teacher this year, and I had assumed that everybody who needed to learn English was ESL. Our assistant principal kept saying something about LEP students, and I had no clue what he was talking about, as the only expression I had ever heard of was ESL or maybe ESOL. Once I began to attend the "new teacher" workshops, this became clear.

Hi heger,
LEP stands for "Limited English Proficient." There is also FEP, fluent English proficienct, and NEP, Non English proficient. When kids are assessed on their language proficiency, their score will determine their English proficiency level.
