living the life of a substitute teacher is like your first day at a new job. Every single day. You never know what you're going to walk into. You don't know if you will make friends. You're not sure what you'll be doing. You don't have anyone to have lunch with. AND you never know what kind of curveball life is going to throw at you that day.

No wonder I drink....

you do get 'used to it'. Students and teachers eventually get familiar with you. The secretaries get welcoming. The 'drill' gets to be second nature!

and you would think that all of this would prepare us in social situations. And still, I am nervous when I enter new schools, meeting new people, sitting in the staff rooms.

Maybe I'm lucky, but since getting into the groove of only accepting jobs at my favorite schools it has become a fun career, though I always remember my reputation is still only as good as my last assignment.

And of course it's always a great feeling when students from past assignments see me around the campus and greet me by name, brightens my day!

lovetosub, I couldn't have said it better myself

I still get a little nervous each time I am with a new group of students... There are a few schools that I am a little more comfortable at and have a few people that I am friendly with but generally, the "first day at a new job" feeling is always with me.
