Can anyone recommend a great 7th grade US History textbook (Pre-Colonial - Civil War) that shows a balanced, people's perspective? Something James W. Loewen would be proud of! Thanks, and keep working hard. You all inspire me!

I use History Alive. I've found all history books(and history teachers, for that matter) present some sort of bias, but this book is easy for the kids to read, has a good format, and some of the activities that come with the program are great.

This is my first year teaching 7th grade social studies, so I am still learning the curriculum myself. We have Prentice Hall's AMERICA: History of Our Nation. It covers the time period that you are interested in. There are lots of resources (lots) with it (maybe too many). The series comes with DVD clips to support chapter concepts. There is also a CD that has a gameshow which the kids love for reviewing. You also have the option to get an Interactive Notetaking Study Guide for students which summarizes each section and asks questions about key points. I like the series so far.

Ours is called American History: Beginnings Through Reconstruction by McDougal Littell. I think it's a pretty balanced textbook overall.
