Last year i subbed at a school for two months but worked on the last day of school and saw subs giving Ann Taylor gifts to teachers and secretaries. I only gave a thank you card to the office. I wasn't really called back in September. I guess this is what some subs do to get called back do you do this?

I have only given one teacher a gift, she retired this year and has given me a great deal of work over the years. It was just a card and a Starbucks gift card so we could get together for coffee over the summer.

Never never never. I get requested back all the time. Often by schools and teachers I'd rather not sub at/for again.

I would not do this.

I wouldnt feel the need to give a gift. There is one 3rd grade teacher whom I sub for every year multiple times and at the end of every year she gives me a gift usually a gift card. This year she gave me baby clothes.

I dont think your not being called back in september stems from not giving a gift.

that the school had some teachers retire at the end of last year and those teachers are getting preference as subs. Or that there were layoffs and those teachers have preferential calling.

If people need bribes to use my services, they don't deserve my services.

No, I've never given gifts or a card at any point during the year. I don't think gifts have an impact on whether you get called back or not. A sub at one school I work at brought in homemade sweets for the entire staff once and she gets called by them much less than I do.

I think being reliable, flexible, professional, polite, and pleasant gets you called back.

One year I gave small Christmas gifts to a few of my favorite teachers. I'd been subbing for them for so many years they had become friends. I also brought in a plate of cookies to share with teachers another Christmas. I've never bothered with a bribe kind of gift to keep them calling me. I'm the hero that comes in and saves the day. That should be gift enough.

Do we make enough to buy gifts, and from Ann Taylor at that? Does anyone have a substitute appreciation day? I love subbing but I'm a bit jaded about getting love or affirmation in return for our services.

This is probably pretty late, as you are most likely already on summer vacation. At this one school where I sub very regularly- like usually twice a week or more often and sometimes a whole week or more- before the summer starts, I buy a card for everyone and leave it in the staffroom. The staff there will sometimes bring in treats to the staffroom- which everyone is welcome to- teachers, EAs, admin, cleaners, subs, student teachers, student EAs, you get the picture- so once in a few months or so I'll stop by Tim Horton's and bring in Timbits and leave it in the staffroom.

I don't think me bringing in Timbits once in a while and getting a card gets me to work there any more often than I do, I've only started doing this 2 years ago and have subbed in that school regularly since 2010. I've been able to form positive bonds with the kids and teachers (who are very outgoing and friendly for the most part) and when I have free time I offer to cover classes.

I think I'd be getting called in regardless of whether I'd bring snacks or not. However, I do it because the people at that school treat me and other subs (teacher as well as EA) quite well and it's nice to give something back.
