So, I got my very first 4th grade class list yesterday. 25 kids....17 boys. Oh my. My nervousness just kicked it up a notch!

it was my first year and it was a rough one but i made it through! last year in first grade i had 17 boys out of 22, not as bad because they are younger. and now next year, i have 15 girls out of 22! go figure! you'll be ok, just be strict with your behavior management plan

17 boys? Wow! I usually have about 5 students that don't show up at the beginning of the year (and get replaced with new incoming students). Hopefully, some of your boys will be replaced with girls. Good luck!

Sometimes it doesn't matter

if they are boys or girls. Some of my best students last year were boys and some of my problem students were girls. It just depends on the type of home the kids come from. I've had some beautiful little girls over the years that were horrible. Don't be discouraged-you may be thrilled to find out that you have wonderful boys who have been taught from home how to behave at school. As pp states, be sure, no matter what students you get, to have a good discipline plan. Even "good" students will try to get away with what they can if there is not discipline and structure. I had a horrible time with discipline my first two years of teaching and then I took a Lee Canter Assertive discipline course. That was 20 years ago.

Wow that will be different for you. Not all the boys will be trouble, keep that in mind. The boys tend to have less drama than the girls sometimes. Have a great year!

Boys

can be rascals because they are usually so physical, but I love them. I have 4 boys of my own. I find that the girls are usually the ones who do the whiney, tattletale stuff that drives me nuts. My co-teacher has all girls at home, so the boys drive her nuts -- with wiping their mouths on their sleeves, and the extra noise that travels with them.

I agree with pp that it's not really an issue of too many boys vs too many girls. I had all but 2 girls year before last and only 3 (4 at the very beginning or the year) boys this year. It more depends on their personalities. Too many alpha persoalities can make a difficult day....

I think you'll be just fine. Too many girls at that age and you'd be dealing with DRAMA all of the time. Just make sure you're switching things up enough so they can get up and move and I bet you'll wish you had that many boys every year!

**On a slightly different note...be sure to have plenty of room fresheners...kids really start stinking at that age!!

No worries.. I would take a class of boys anyday...esp at the 4th grade level. Less drama. You'll do great!

I was reading pp's and I agree with the girl thing! So much drama. I divided my class list yesterday and I have 19 girls and 9 boys. Should be an interesting year!!!

I agree with the others - it could go either way (having mostly girls or mostly boys).

Just be sure you have a good classroom management plan, go over and over and over it at the beginning, stick to it.

I would also research some good games/reviews/activities that give the kids a chance to expend some energy (get up and out of their seats) at least once each day.

I agree that it doesn't always matter if there are more boys. Usually it depends on the child. A couple of years ago I had a bunch of girls with way too much drama.

4th Grade Girls

equals DRAMA at least in the spring. don't get me wrong, I love the girlies, but WOW sometimes I wished for a class full of boys. Boys are still pretty immature at that age so there is just a lot of, well, boy stuff. They argue...but the GET OVER IT...unlike some of the girls. You will be fine! Enjoy 4th graders...they really are fun!

I have more boys than girls this year. I will again this next year. I guess it's ok with me. I plan to just line up as 2 lines rather than a boy's line and a girl's line.

In my experience, more boys = MUCH better than more girls! Girls bring too much cattiness and drama - boys, get them hooked and they'll eat out of your hand all year!

I Have 29 Kids And 17 Of Them Are Girls. With Girls' Drama, I Think Sometimes I Would Rather Have More Boys!
