I went from 2nd to 3rd a few years ago. There are great things about third graders. They are more independent, there is less tattling, cooperative grouping/partner work is much easier, they can follow a rubric, most read enough to get through tasks.
The hardest part for me was not knowing the range of the learners the first year. Some are very high and sophisticated, some not so much. I always felt like I did a good job differentiating for my second graders. It took a little time to adjust, but I did.
Needless to say that for me, I miss second grade and I would like to move back. Most of my team think third grade is the best grade to teach. Good luck!

I did it once and loved it. I would have stayed if it wasn't for the high stakes testing. Remember that they are more mature than second graders (thanks to super second grade teachers). Don't treat them like babies.
It is much easier to get them to do independent work, and it will take them less time to learn the routines and how to work quietly while you are with a small group.
Of course I had 19 students, and only 3 of them were on grade level. The others were 1-2 years behind. I

It's a very easy move! You just pick up where you left off.
