Setting up new classroom

I am moving rooms, and everything is in boxes to be unpacked and organized.

How many days do you allow when you need to set up a new room? I'm figuring at least 3 full days. Am I being too optimistic? My P doesn't want us to decorate, he wants us to "build the room" with the kids, so at least that is off my plate.

I think 3 would be enough to get unpacked and set up.

I hope I never have to do that again. I considered moving my room around this year, but then decided, "why?" . Not taking extra time if I don't have to.

My new p wanted to put me in a room with AC. I think I love him.

And it has a bathroom. No more having first graders sign out to use the bathroom across the hall! Hallelujah!

And it's bigger. Bonus!

3 days sounds sufficient especially if you're teaching the same grade and are basically just unpacking.

I always find myself painting so allow for that if necessary.

I have moved rooms six times in 28 years at my school. I have completed it in two days, but I agree that three is more likely. Your first goal is to move old items out of the room. Once the old items were out, I would then see what I needed and how to organize the room. The good thing is you get rid of a lot of things you donít use when you move rooms.

I would plan for at least 3 days-but they don't necessarily have to be full days. It might go quicker for you this year since you can work in A/C and won't be melting. You are so lucky!!!

If you already know what furniture you have and the dimensions of the room, you can plan out your areas before you even go in. When I moved into my classroom the first time, I measured the classroom and main pieces of furniture. Then I did a close to scale drawing on paper and cut out templates for the furniture out of paper. I played around with different arrangements. It is so much easier to slide pieces of paper around than having to drag the heavy furniture around when I got into my classroom.

I would place the furniture first to make sure it fits in the arrangement I want to use. When you bring your boxes into your classroom, distribute them to areas they belong in. Work on one area at a time. Another hint-this is a good time to get rid of things you don't need. As you empty boxes and put away stuff, make a pile of stuff you no longer want/use or have multiples of. (Over the years, it is easy to accumulate stuff with the different curriculum adoptions. i.e. How many different kinds of rulers do your students need? Pick your favorite kind and put the rest in the pile to either give away or throw away.)

Good luck!

I didn't know you were moving rooms! I hope your grade stayed 1st! I know your principal was going to talk about moving some people's grade level. I'm glad it's bigger and has AC, though! That's awesome!

I've moved rooms a lot. I'd say 3 days is fine. I know my last two moves took a lot longer, like a week or more, but that was because the people before me didn't clean out the room, so it took me longer because I had to clean up their stuff before I could do myself.

I appreciate your input. I want to get set up before my student teacher starts
so I can give her my attention.

I know the teacher who had the room before cleared it out, as she moved right down the hall.

I usually take about a week at least. But if you work fast and you don't need to decorate too much, you should be good. Really all you will need to set up immediately is bulletin board paper, your desk, and student desks. Everything else can be done slowly after that.

I'm in a new classroom this year as well. I have already put in two half-days (9:00-12:00), and should finish by the third.

You are so lucky to have a bathroom in your classroom!
