Readings for 1st and 2nd grade students

Hello,

I would like to get some opinions about the appropriate length for readings for first and second grade students. I've been asked to prepare some simple texts on a few basic scientific topics. The idea is that they would read the entire text in one sitting as part of a 20 minute activity. There are a number of tools I can use for assessing the lexile score and reading grade level, but what about the length?

I've noticed that DIBELS materials for first grade are usually about 200-230 words long. Quite honestly, that seemed a bit long to me. I imagine there's quite a bit of difference between first and second graders, but does anyone have a view about what constitutes an appropriate length for a reading?

Check out the reading passages and comprehension questions for Grade 1 and 2 science on ReadWorks. It will give you a good idea of appropriate length. You may even find passages that match your science topics.

I'll be sure to check out Read Works. It sounds like a very good source of reading materials for all ages.

I have found books at wilbooks that fit with our students at different reading levels. They are easy and inexpensive which is always a bonus. They are running a free book for your teacher program if you get students to sign up that might help you get a first hand look at them. I will look for the link and post in the thread if your interested.

Here is the link that I was speaking about. It is actually autographed as well, so I am sure the kids would love it. Anyway, hope this helps.
