Hands-on Middle school Math

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I am looking for some ideas to use with grades 6-8 for a summer program. I am hoping to be able to set up center type areas in the room for students to explore various concepts of math while I work with other students one-on-one who need the extra help to catch up in math. I need some ideas for hands-on activities that students can do by following directions on cards if I supply the materials for them. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated, even if you just have the start of an idea, I may be able to work with it and add to it.

Thank you for any suggestions.

Algebra exploration

You can have the students explore, extend, and record growing patterns (functions). They can use pattern blocks to make the patterns, then record them on the an algebraic representation page (attached). The site below has some ideas, or you can google "growing patterns". If you have any Marilyn Burns/Math Solutions resources, there is more information there. It is easily adaptable to different grade levels depending on the patterns you choose. Students could also make their own patterns.

You could also make concentration (matching) games easily with many topics. For example- integer operations- type integer problems and answers on cards for students to match up. You could do geometry vocabulary (word-picture), or one-step equations (problem-answer). This site was recently posted in another thread- it has templates for making cards- very handy. http://www.donnayoung.org/homeschool...game-cards.htm
