It took several hours...the artist spend about an hour and a half designing it (based on my sketch) and then about 2.5 hours doing the actual tattoo, but I am very happy with the results! So, without further ado:

Whoops! It’s upside down! Please stand on your head to view it.

The symbols are from Ghana and are called adinkra symbols. They are usually block printed on fabric that is worn on special occasions. Each symbol has a meaning:

The top one (yellow background) is Gye Nyame...it literally means “unless God” and is a symbol of God’s supremacy in all things.

The next one (green background) is Asase ye duru...”the earth has weight”...it symbolizes the providence of Mother Earth

Next (red) is Osram ne Nsoromma...”moon and star”...it is a symbol of faithful love.

Finally (blue) Sesa wo Suban...”morning star within a wheel”...transformation and change.

There are many other adinkra symbols. These just represent personal meaning to me.

Do the designs have a meaning?
Just checked back here. I love the fact that each symbol has a special meaning for you! Enjoy!!!

I love it! When I taught 3rd grade, we did a whole thing about adinkraóso cool! Itís gorgeous!

I sometimes have trouble seeing what Iím supposed to see (probably from years of my dad saying, ďYouíre not looking where Iím pointing.Ē). Until you explained it was upside-down (which Iím sure most people saw right away), I couldnít figure out where on your body the tattoo was and thought it was the bottom of your foot.

Lisa, it is beautiful.. My dd 21 was supposed to go to Ghana in June but she didn't have her visa. I guarantee she would've come back with a tattoo like that if not that exact one. Very meaningful and looks great!

That's nice! I like the edges, which might be strange to comment on, but I had been wondering about another tattoo and it has to have blurry edges. I wondered if it could be done. I think it can.

It is intriguing and original. It would be fun to do an embroidery of those types of patterns.

On a scale of 1 to 10, what is the pain level with this much ink?

I didn’t think it was especially painful. Basically like being scratched with a pin. I do have a high pain threshold...but it really wasn’t bad. I would call it a 3 or 4

It is beautiful and I love that it has meaning to you. I always want to know the backstory to tattoos and am often tempted to ask random people about their tattoos. Sometimes I get brave and ask. I have been disappointed when people have tattoos that don't have any meaning.

I often tell people that about my tattoos. They actually do have meaning, it is kind of personal and hard to explain the meaning.

Lisa- I love the tattoo as well as the meaning behind each symbol.

Amiga- it took me forever to figure out the picture was upside down as well.

Lisa, I think you are amazing! i knew you would be thoughtful and intentional about what you chose, but this is more than I imagined. It is awesome! Kudos to you for choosing this expression of what is important to you.

On a less serious note, I was one of those who was also startled by the upside down pic, wondering just what part of the body I was looking at!
