What is typical timeline to get IEP paperwork for students in your room who have them. Do you get them before the year starts? One day 1? A few weeks in?

For us everything is electronic and housed in the same system (IEPs, 504s, EL plans, healthcare plans, intervention plans, etc.). Teachers will get access to their class a couple of weeks before school starts, and anyone who has a special plan will have an indicator next to their name when you log in so you know to look at it. This year, we had so many new people that I also emailed out IEP snapshots just to cover myself. I sent them during the work days when teachers were back but students hadn't started yet.

I never have access to IEPs unless I seek them out. My first view of a studentís needs comes at the first IEP meeting. Usually the IEPs are for speech. The speech teacher will give me a list of my students and why they are in speech about a week after school starts.

I give all my teachers a copy of the accommodations on teacher training days for each of my IEP students.

Thank you. I've never had to beg for the information before...so I was just trying to decide if I'm being too type A in requesting access by the first day of school.

Not only do we get them before school starts-when have to sign a form saying that we got it and we have asked and had answered any necessary questions to be able to implement the accommodations we are responsible for.

Its a game of CYA-because no way do we get all questions answered-we cant even know what questions we need answered until we have tried to implement and work with the student.

As a parent I respect it though-I was never happy when I asked teacher at "meet the teacher" if they had read his IEP so they were ready for him only to hear things like-"I like to meet and work with the student for a while before reading it so I dont get any biased opinions".

Ok ...sounds nice...however what you are saying is that you have no plans to be in compliance with his IEP or providing the requirements in the offer of FAPE that is a legal contract between us for a while...Ummmmm no, I am not cool with that.

SO, no you arent being type A, you are being diligent with following your legal requirements and respecting the students rights.

We hand them out on the teacher workdays or by that Friday at the latest.

Ours are electronic and can be accessed as soon as class rosters are done. We are expected to read over and accept them before school starts.
