We are a mess

Wednesday (9/4) was my surgery to remove my bladder and have the neo-bladder put in (as a part of my cancer treatment). The surgery went well but took a lot longer than expected. It was supposed to be from 8:30 to 1, I didn't get in recovery until 7. I am still in the ICU but I should be moved out on Sunday.

Today was the first time since Tuesday I have been allowed to eat or drink anything. All I wanted was unsweet black tea from Panera . My school sent me an Edible Arrangement, and I was super excited to eat the pineapple, which I don't normally eat. Well... turns out I am allergic to pineapple , my doctors were not amused. I was not either.

Also, while DW was in the waiting room on surgery day, she had a shortness of breath. Turns out, her lung collapsed. We are not having a fun time. And they won't even give us a room together! How rude!

Funny story, right after the nurse took something out of my artery and blood spewed everywhere, the priest came in... HE READ ME MY LAST RITES! For those who don't know, the last rights are read to you on your deathbed as a way to absolve you of all your sins. Why he read it to me, I don't know. But the timing was too perfect for me not to be a little freaked out.

Oh wow, you have had quite the adventure lately! Yikes!! I'd freak out if a priest were reading me last rites! Week! Glad you're ok and should be out of the ICU within a few days. I hope your wife is ok-- was she not in good health? Why did her lung collapse?

The doctor thinks it was due to stress.

Between my health issues and the stress of her job, she's been through the wringer.

You have had a very eventful procedure and hospital stay. I am glad you can finally eat again. That is a very good step in the right direction. I hope your digestive tract all works well. I hope your DW and you both heal well and can go home soon. I can see how the last rights incident might make a funny story one day ,but not when it first happened.

I too am allergic to pineapples. It causes me to have an asthma attack. I am sorry you had that added to your health journey. But at least you know now not to eat food and drinks with pineapple. Please also know that pineapple is often used in meat marinades. It is often used in party and wedding punches to keep the punch from being too sweet. So be very careful.

Feel better!

Oh my lord you are having a time. Sending you lots of love.

But, in all seriousness, I busted out laughing over the last rites and blood. Sorry, I have a twisted sense of humor.

I'm glad you are feeling well enough to post, and can have a sense of humor about this very rough week.

Hooray for getting out of ICU. I hope your wife is recovering, and that the staff is making her rest and attempt to relax.

Hugs to you guys.

I don’t know if I could have handled all that as well as you! Glad everything is under control now and hope the rest of your stay lacks any excitement other than when you are discharged to go home! Best to you and your DW. Hope she is doing well and will get to go home soon too.

That is a lot for.one couple to endure. Good thing the allergic reaction occured at the hospital, not that the timing was good, but it had to be better than having it happen once you got home. Your poor wife! I didn't know it was even possible for a collapsed lung to be brought on by stress. I'm sure you will both be happy once you both recover and get back home.

I'm glad the surgery went well! Sending hugs and prayers to you and your wife! Y'all have been through an eventful week. That poor priest must have been completely freaked out! I'm glad you've got a clean slate (sin-free) from here on out!

I'm seconding the "be really careful to read labels" message about pineapple. I have an allergic family member and pineapple juice seems to be EVERYWHERE. It is used to sweeten cocktails, wines, salad dressings, marinades, barbecue sauce, and salsa. It pops up in places you'd never imagine!

Good luck to both of you - Hopefully this will all be a memory soon!

Man, what a hospital stay for you and DW. That's a lot going on at once! Glad you got "Last Rites"- that should protect you from more disasters. Hoping both of you feel better soon!

BTW, Last Rites are now the Anointing of the Sick, so don't worry unnecessarily about why he did it!

Wow, you and your wife have had quite the adventure lately! I am glad you are nearing the end of your time in ICU and glad your DW was in the right place when her lung collapsed. Praying for quick healing for both of you! And your last rites, I am sure it wasn't funny then, but it is now !
