Clip to ScrapBook #1

I teach resource, 1st and 2nd, and only have my Para for 1 hour. I must teach grade level skills with only 30 minutes of backing up to where the students are. I teach W&W for reading.
My question is what do you have your Para do? I am struggling this year as I currently have her working with below level phonics. No matter how many times I speak with her about it she does not pronounce the sound correctly. For example she add the “u” sound to most words/letters when sounding out. I need something else for her to do so they WAY below level 2nd grade students can get the correct instruction. An example of what I am saying: zipper, when sounding out she says, zu-i-pp-er

Can you have your assistant do tasks like run copies, monitor kids while you teach, or grade papers? I would model the below level lessons for your assistant several times and state to her what you want her to pay attention to. (In this case the pronunciations.)

Can you model for her? Say to cut off the U sound. I use my hand as a visual showing cutting sign. Explain to cut off the sound because it changes the sounds when kids sound out the word.
Tell her to shorten it to just the consonant sound. Zzz makes the bee sound zzzzz, not zu .
Tell her Its a common mistake that students make, so teachers (and paras) need to be very careful.

Sadly as mentioned above I have modeled, redirected, given data to show why and had a sit down to discuss with her. Nothing is working and she does what she “wants” and gets very upset is corrected. Copies are a no and need her working with students.
