Needing Ideas for Motivation

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I am working in a self-contained special education setting with elementary. I have two students, from the same household, that are less than motivated to do work. I can give them choices and let them have lead way in the activities they want to do, but when it comes time that they are the least bit challenged, they completely shut down. This can be a simple, direct challenge or independent work. Verbal praise works great on good days. These students start their day this way and it is difficult to change the attitude throughout the day. I have done a check in system in the mornings, but it is not making the difference I had hoped for. Does anyone have ideas on how to help motivate the students to complete work or participate in activities?
