Charting Progress

I am wanting to monitor progress on a weekly basis to show whether my students are moving or not. I do a running record each day with one child from each group, but I find that my chart is all messed up as we are constantly chaning levels of books. What do you all monitor if anything? In 1st grade I monitor alphabet knowledge and sight words. I am looking for something for my 3rd graders. Thanks for you help!

We monitor fluency. We use Dibels, but you could use anything. You could pick a grade level passage and time students for one minute. Quick and easy.

Weekly is too often

I think you could make better use of your time by monitoring progress less often. At least the children I work with don't show much progress on a weekly basis. I monitor monthly. I have decided which characteristics I want to check in their reading and then have them read from a book at their level. This shows me several things: if they have moved up their reading level, and if their use of strategies/phonic skills, prosody, etc. is at a beginning developing, or secure level.
