First day subbing in high school business. I really didn't know how to prepare but I'm glad I had a pack of sticky notes. First two periods were computer classes working in Word. Piece of cake. Desktop publishing and I could help. Had all the students write their names on their stickies and put them on their computers... attendance was done! Next three were marketing and I was just a babysitter. I felt kind of useless, the day before a major holiday weekend, teacher said let them work on any work, my class or others. So I can't compete with a classroom full of computers. I walked around and watched them play games. Is this typical for high school subbing?

Congrats on your first day subbing! Sounds like you had a pretty easy day. I don't sub in high school, so I have no idea if you had a typical day

You had a typical day.

I much prefer when HS teachers leave "work to be completed today, for a grade."

Instructing students in a room full of computers to work on any work is a recipe for them to mess around on said computers, and there's not really much you can do about it, save from keeping them away from blatantly objectionable material. If I find anything along those lines (even things like craigslist or sites that I know aren't allowed at school) I'll say something like, "Listen, I'm looking the other way on this computer thing, so at least work with me and cut out the XYZ." This usually works.

You did fine!

Sounds like a very typical sub day in high school.

I love to sub h.s when I have a full week else where (meaning on my feet all day), so that I can just have an easy day to recoup.
