What do you love to read on the first day? I'll be teaching second grade this year so I can't read The Night Before First Grade and I'm tired of First Day Jitters. Any ideas?

Ira Sleeps Over! I always read that to my third graders. Ira learns to just be himself and at the same time learns that others are just like him, no matter what his sister says! One follow up activity we always did was to finish the ghost story Reggie started before they fell asleep. As they were writing their stories I played a tape of spooky Halloween sounds. They weren't expecting that but they loved it!

I cannot remember the books, but I do remember staying away from all the “first day jitters” style books. They’ve been in school for two years. Sometimes I just read one or two of my favorite short read aloud...no theme at all. I read them because I loved them and could get excited about them with the class.
