I went out with this guy on Monday (see post below). He texted me and wants to get together again on Saturday. I have had plans with a friend for weeks and don't want to cancel on her. I said I'm free any other time that weekend. He texts back and says he is only free after 8 on Friday.

Um, after 8 on a Friday in May? I'm still in school and I will be wiped out. But, I don't want to turn him down and act like the old lady that I am.

How can I respond in a way that is light-hearted, but still kind of sends the message that I am up for it, but it needs to be short because I will be exhausted? I don't function well when I am tired.

“I would love to! Just so you know, this end of the school year teacher has a curfew of 10:00. How about wine and appetizers? Or coffee and cookies?”

And, yeah, I know, just staying awake til 8:00 could be problematic.

Something along the lines of, yeah that sounds fun, but I'm like cinderella, I turn into a pumpkin if I'm out too late at the end of the school year when I'm logging 10 hr work days.
Or something like that

Have a nap after school and then go out and enjoy yourself! When I met my now husband he wanted to meet at 8 on a weeknight (I think it was a Thursday). I so didn’t want to go that late but I did and well the rest is history.

This sounds like you need to set up your ability to compromise.

8pm is fine and June 7th is next in line.

Okay, so he texted again and is thinking mini-golf. I'll go because I want to keep the momentum going and don't want to be stuck wondering for longer. If I'm feeling tired, I thought I could say something along the lines of "My mini-golf game might not be on par due to it being a Friday night at the end of the year, or at least that's the excuse I'm going with for now."

Thanks for the thoughts!

You need to go and have a good time.

I wouldn’t act like 8 pm is too late. He may think you aren’t into him. Have a coke or coffee so you aren’t tired. Sleep in on Saturday, you only live once!

Most people outside of the profession have no idea of a teacher's life after work. I'd give him the benefit of doubt this time . His work schedule may dictate his availability.

I think you'll get a better idea after a second date. Could be his schedule revolves around custody-- I think you said he has a kid?

Good point about being able to sleep in the next day.

Go out anyway! Get yourself a cup of coffee before you go out. You can always sleep in on Saturday. I'm always tired on Friday, but get a second wind after I'm showered and dressed. You'll be fine.

I'm not worried about his busy schedule. It's one weekend that we seem to have conflicting available times. It happens! I'm not going to read into it at this point.

I totally know what you mean about Friday nights. I agree - take a power nap after school (set your alarm for 20 min.!), take a shower, drink a cup of coffee and have a great time!

Yes, we want an update on Sat. morning.

Thanks, everyone! Dating makes me anxious, but it's helpful to have you all to talk things through with.
