Clip to ScrapBook #1

I am teaching 3rd grade and am interested to find out how to use the writer's notebook to gather seeds for writing. I am looking for mini-lesson ideas and other practical classroom ideas.

Thanks!!

I highly recommend the book Notebook Know How. It has SOOOOO many great mini lessons to use with the writers' notebook. Ideas on writing about their names, using lists, reading like writers etc.

Hope that helps!

Mini Lesson Ideas

Lucy Calkins' Units of Study are all filled with mini-lessons for student writer's notebooks. As for seed ideas, she starts off by having kids brainstorm people, places, and things that they have "crystal clear memories" about (meaning that they can clearly tell the story to someone else). The "Units of Study" room has a lot of information about this as well.

I use the first third of the NB as my strategy section. Where every few days (more in the beginning of the year of course) I teach specific strategies on how to gather seed ideas. Scars on my body, map of my house, watermelon and seeds, first time I,..., last time I..., etc. Then the rest of the NB is used for students to write entries on the right hand side of the page. The left hand side of the page is used for editing and revising entries that students will then turn into personal narrative (or whatever other type of writing we are focusing on).
