First Year HS Math--2nd Career

Clip to ScrapBook #1

I'm starting my 2nd career in my 50's and am teaching HS Math. I am used to working very long hours and having voluminous paperwork, but this is ridiculous. I'm at school for 14 hours/day and work at home for another 2-3 hours and every weekend. I have 140 kids, teach 7 out of 8 periods and a dictatorial department head that thinks the way to gets things better is to berate me in front of the other math teachers and send me endless accusatorial emails demanding explanations. I've never quit anything in my life but I don't know how much more I can take.
I know I'm wek on classroom management and do not seem to be reaching the kids. They look like they're listening to me, are working on their white boards only when I come by their desk, and still do horribly on their tests--some not even trying to answer the questions.
The school I'm at are 80% economically disadvantages, rural and predominantly minority; however, the schools state test results have been exemplary for the last 5 years.
Any suggestions?

Do you have a mentor? Is there anybody who can help run interference for you and give you some advice? 140 kids is an awful caseload. Until you get the classes in order, I would teach cookbook math, going exactly by the teacher manual. Don't spend your time trying to do fancy lessons. Is there any way to talk to parents to get their support? Send a newsletter or something? You need somebody to help get the kids in line.
