My teaching partner and I would like to do a fun project that integrates science and social studies. May is our last month and we'll soon take the OAA. We want something engaging and educational. Any good ideas?

We're studying pioneers and making butter (surprisingly easy). We're starting by talking about states of matter. We're going to watch a Bill Nye video about, talk about the 3 states, ask if things can be more than one state of matter at a a time, etc. and then make butter in a baby food jar.

The kids are getting one jar to share, shake for 2 min, switch, shake or another 2, then (using tongue depressers from the nurse), they'll spread it on bread first with no salt and then adding salt. Does it taste like butter today, etc. We're going to give them each a small piece of bread. One loaf of bread was enough for the class.

They'll split the leftover and each will have a jar (not a full jar) of butter to take home.

The link is at school but I can send it to you Monday if you're interested. I haven't done it but my partner did and she said it worked perfectly.

My favorite experiment for states of matter is ooblek!

Maybe you could do something with landforms. Just thinking out loud here.

The teacher could tell students which landform to create with shaving cream or play dough. I have done this part before with success and the students did enjoy the process.

Then she could have them find these landforms on maps or explain how they are formed. Perhaps they could use their science book to help with the explanations.

Students could work in teams and compete for the most points.

This sounds like fun. I am planning to try this with my third graders before the year is over. It is more engineering/science than social studies. But, students do have to use social skills and work as a team.
Check Pinterest for pics and more information if needed.

I really love this idea! I think I will use it at the beginning of the school year next year! I am on medical leave the remaining days this year. Do you think beginning 3rd graders could do this?
