Does anyone know of more cooperative learning, problem solving activites similar to Save Fred? Could be any subject, not just science. I wish I could find a book or website with that type activity, they are great.

Spaghetti Marshmallow Tower

Clip to ScrapBook #2

I always do this activity during the first few days of school. I buy 1 box of uncooked spaghetti, 1 bag of large marshmallows & 1 bag of mini marshmallows. I put my students in groups of 3 or 4. (I have a small special ed class of about 10). I give each group a handful of spaghetti, a few large marshmallows & a handful of minis marshmallows. Then they are given a certain amount of time to construct a tower. Most years, the purpose has been to construct the tallest tower (that will stand on it's own). A few times I have done it where the objective is to build the strongest tower. I teach 7th & 8th grade & the kids always seem to love this activity.

You will need approx 20 different items with a towel to cover all of them.

Ask all the students to look at the items you have collected. Give all the students 2 minutes to look at the items you have assembled. Ask them to sit down and write down all the items they can remember. Now, form teams of 3 or 4. See how many items they can recall & list as a group.

Google: Paper Bridge Activity PBS

Looks like a fun activity - I may try it this year during my science class.
