Brownie Bear is gone.:(

Our pit bull/ lab cross, who would have turned 14 in two weeks, is gone. I say she’s close enough to be called 14, and I have been. It’s sort of an honor for a dog to live that long and she deserves it.

This is the last picture I took of her before she started going down hill. She was actually kind of chubby! She lost 20 lbs this last couple of weeks.

She had a vestibular disease episode a couple of months ago so our vet made us wait a bit before she would put her down. But as she did not improve and in fact stopped eating all together for five consecutive days even with appetite stimulants , so it was recommended that she be humanely euthanized .

I went through a pet rescuing phase in my 20s. I am turning 39 this month. That means I have several elderly pets all at the same time. I didn’t think about how difficult that would be for me now back then. But she was a co- rescuer and not a rescue. She helped us with the animals we brought home.

I have still have cat 1, age 12, cat 2, age 11, dog 1 age 11, dog 2 age 11, dog 3 age 8 and new kitten of daughter’s.

All animals we have now (except kitten) are animals I fostered through a small, locally run agency. They were never adopted for one issue or another and the group actually disbanded after a lawsuit involving injury (not with me) which is okay as I love them all very much, it’s just that it was either I keep them of they had to go to a shelter.

Anyway, Brownie Bear was my husband’s last truly adopted by choice and not adopted due to necessity dog.

She is the dog my daughter grew up with. She was good will all children and other dogs. Our pit bull we had to keep for dog aggression at a facility was raised into being a kind soul by her lovely way with other dogs. He can now be kenneled and play with other dogs peacefully when we are away because she taught him that other dogs aren’t so bad. He is now 8 and so sweet and friendly with all.

I trusted her with all the big fosters (I kept big and littles separate) and she never had any problems with any other dogs. She was also a big dog I trusted to be with the little tiny dogs, too, when needed.

She was stubborn with me as the wife of her favorite person, and I was a little stressed by her presence when she was young as I was very late in my pregnancy with my first baby and then had a newborn , and her dad wasn’t really the one to be taking care of the nitty gritty , but she was such a character over all. So full of spirit.

Up until this last month she was still jumping up and trying to climb tree to catch squirrels and stealing my snacks left and right. She would steal food off the stove if I wasn’t on top of it. But she was so socially well behaved with all creatures big and small, it was hard to be mad at her. She was a kind hearted scamp.

I have leaky eyes from reading your tribute to Brownie Bear. Her memories will be on your heart always.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
