Today the school called me to tell me that my 1st grade son had a sub today and she didn't get the class out on time at the end of the day and the bus left without my son! I had to go to school to get him from the office. Apparently, this is the same sub who made the same son's class miss lunch a few weeks ago, as she took them to the cafeteria a period too late (they ended up eating in the classroom)! I know as a mom these things should annoy me, but as a sub, all I could think was "thank god it wasn't it wasn't me!!" I can really feel for her, I'm sure she's kicking herself tonight!

And this is exactly why I'm so phobic about sticking to the schedule!!! That would be my nightmare. It is so hard being in different schools each day, with different EVERYTHING! I feel sorry for that sub. She must be mortified. Let's face it: it could happen to any of us.

My kid had a sub who couldn't stay awake. He had a paper w/ times on it. i asked him what it was...he said all th etimes the sub fell asleep and then he laughed and said how quiet they were so he'd stay aasleep. gEESH!

THEN....a few days ago I foudn out this same sub managed to somehow screw up passing out a worksheet to the kids - so now all the kids got a late grade b/c mr. sleepy couldn't even pass out pages right OR walk around the room and notice that only a handful even had work on their desk.

I was so mad over this one I have requested that sub not be allowed back in that room. When you start costing kids grades w/ your incompetence it's time to work somewhere not w/ kids. I bust my butt at every sub job and mistakes happen but geesh!!!

I'm pretty anal about being on time and schedules which works out well for subbing. Still there was one time when the art teacher called and said - Ah Nina? I said yesssss - Did you forget they have art right now? I gasped and then cracked up laughing. I got them down lickedly split. Years later those same kids still kid me and say that I loved them so much I didn't want to give them up even for special! I totally agree !

I want to say though that I get annoyed with other subs that are obviously clueless. Although I have empathy and patience for their plight - they make us all look like we're idiots. There are so many times when I'm new to a teacher that I have to actually prove that I know what I'm doing and have to earn her trust. Everyone takes it for granted that since I sub I must obviously be an idiot. Sighhhhhh - I wish I got the same respect as other teachers who they figure if you got the job and you are certified then you must know what you are doing.

Wow now there's a way to keep kids quiet that I haven't tried! I should do that....nothing bad could happen could it???

when the regular teacher was out. The sub read the instructions to Every Single Class verbatim from the teacher's notes. In a monotone. Without looking up to make sure the students were paying attention. And it was a middle school. Seventh graders. He was So Boring. Within 10 minutes he'd lost control of the room. I had to use my teacher voice to get them focused again.

At the end of class, he publicly chastised a child for hair hanging in the kid's face and another for reading too quietly during read aloud time. Geesh. Made my skin crawl. Go back to work in the private sector, will ya?

Just a quick word in defensive of the sub (sorry, I have to). My first time subbing in kindergarten and I almost had a kid miss the bus. Only a small number of kids from the school are bussed, no note or anything was left for me (as well as no lesson plans ) saying that one of the kids in this class got bussed and I didn't think to ask about it. On top of that, being my first time in K, I grossly underestimated how long it would take 25 5 year olds to get packed up to go home. So when the bell rang and not only was the one kid not on the bus but also not even finished packing up, I got a visit from the principal to come escort the kid to the bus.

Thank goodness the bus waited for the kid and nothing was held against me in the end.

As we know, it's not easy being a sub!!
