I did this Fraction Museum with my class today. It was amazing. If you’re looking for an engaging activity to wrap up fractions, I totally recommend it.

I like this! especially since we teach fraction during testing and they get total fraction fatigue. I could also think up a lot of simple ways to expand it, like having 2 exhibits and during the gallery walk they would add the greater than, less than symbols or determine an equivalent fraction. Thanks!

I decided to do 2 math museums this week since we are just wrapping up the year and not a place where I can expect them to learn new concepts.

We did an equivalent fraction museum-they had to create models that could represent 2 equivalent franction. The example I give them was a tower the I built that was three levels high with the legs on the bottom level being a different color each level had 4 legs. I said this represents 2 equivalent franction in one model becuase each level represent a part and one of the three parts in red so it shows 1/3. Each level also has 4 legs so there are 12 total legs and 4 of them are red so it also is showing 4/12. Therefore 1/3 is equal to 4/12. Then I let them go for it. I had to walk around and assist and help with misconceptions but it went really well. So they were clamor in for their next math museum day.

A few days later we did a perimeter museum. I use colored bears to create an L shape and I labeled each side with the number of bears on each side. Then we added them up to find the perimeter. They seemed to get it so I let them go. They did a great.

I'll have to remember to go back later and watch the whole video on my desktop computer. (My iPad is being touchy, and it keeps freezing.)

But from the bit I saw and the comments here, it sounds great! It's so important that kids really get an understanding of fractions early, rather than just memorizing "what to do".
