Hi everyone! I am in my third year of teaching, and after two years of fifth grade math, I was moved to 7th and 8th grade, and an algebra group.

My problem is that half of my algebra group goes to the high school in the morning for an algebra class, and then I have them again the last peirod of the day. So i teach half of the students and a high school teacher teaches half. Then they all come together for a second math period at the end of the day. With this situation, the half that goes to algebra is graded by that teacher, and not me. I cannot give them a grade, even for that second period.

I need ways to keep these kids engaged! My admin suggested projects that last a while, and then it will be easier to pull students who need extra help. However, the students know they aren't being graded by me, so they think "why try?"

Help! I need ideas!!!! I am also going to post this on a high school thread!

Maybe have the kids join competitions online so they have some type of goal to look forward to? Off the top of my head I would probably just get the kids review their Algebra on websites like Beestar and then enroll them in math competitions to see how they compare to other kids. It's a great way to get them more points before going to high school and hopefully it'll keep them engaged.
