Our specialists teams donít get along. Grade levels are against grade levels. I donít know who I can trust. I am relatively new, 3rd year. Each group has valid points, strategies, and annoying habits. One group feels they are always right and the best. They are pretty kick ass. The other group takes any kind of stress and magnifies it x 100. The specialists feel like they canít do their jobs because they are over run by grade levels, they are. I am trying to work with all of them to get a kid support for extreme work avoidance and now Iím getting caught up in the crap. I see all their points.
I feel I have no one. I have no in my corner or a friend at the school or out of the school. My family is great but can only help so much and they donít know how to advise. Even here I run the risk of being flamed for venting and possibly insulting someone. Sorry if I do, not intended.

Well, darn. That sounds lonely. I can't tell from your post what your role at school is, but whatever it is, I know it is important for the students and that you care.

Please take care of yourself. Figure out what things nourish you and then make sure you have them. Exercise? Manicure? Fresh flowers? Chocolate?

And keep your eyes open for a new friend. It helps so much to have someone you can count on. Likely someone outside school would be better.

I started seeing a therapist this year. Best thing I've done for myself. It's a safe place to vent and she's a netural party so I get good, solid advice on how to handle things. That might be something to look into.

Are you a Gemini, by chance???

It can be difficult to see all sides of the story, and not want to have to pick one ďteamĒ. (I know, Iím mixing metaphors here.)

In fact, from personal experience, itís exhausting. Placate this one, agree with that one, try to bring reason and logic to another one.

Finally I just focused on the need at the time: in your case, whatever that one child needs. Stick to facts and data, and stay out of the drama. Think of your feet as roots and dig them into the floor when you need to have your say.

Remain silent while everyone is arguing or being nasty, then bring the subject right back to the issue at hand. ďAs we were discussing, child X has demonstrated low scores in reading and we need to.....Ē

Also, find a therapist to vent to. It saved my soul.

One of my friends says that everyone should have a therapist. She swears by hers.

Fortunately I have work friends and non-work friends I trust. My DH is also a teacher, so we can vent to one another. I've been at my school more than 25 years, so I have a good handle on the dynamics of the building. I do know, however, what it is like to search for your place in the equation. It was at least 5 years before I felt really like I belonged at the school.

I think another thing that helped me is that I'm good at laying low. I don't have a need to make people like me, but I am not disagreeable either. That helps keep me out of drama. We have had some drama-prone folks in the building, but I'm not buying into their nonsense.

Can you bring this up with admin? They are ultimately responsible for the culture of the school.
When students see/feel this type of behavior, it affects them negatively too.
If itís still not getting adressed, consider leaving. I enjoy teaching and wouldnít like to go in every day to this.
Some teachers need to grow up and act like professionals.

I worked at a school like that my final few years before retiring, and it was exhausting. As an ESOL teacher I worked with all grade levels, and I got tired of the nonstop drama.

I'm sending positive thoughts your way.
