Clip to ScrapBook #1

Hi! I'm a new upcoming teacher. I'm in my pedagogy classes now and I'm having to teach social studies for the first time. I have been given the topic: Communities: The differences between rural, suburban, and urban communities and how they work together, etc. Well I don't know where to start and I think I'm over thinking it and stressing. But I'm new to the lesson plan stuff and I'm looking for some guidance from the professionals! I hope you guys can help me out with so ideas and thanks

When I'm planning a big unit, I think about my final project. What's it going to be? Then I brainstorm the big ideas needed to complete the project and work backwards creating the lessons for the unit so i can build on the information.

What grade is this for? What is the standard exactly?

The first thing that popped into my head is the story "Town Mouse, Country Mouse." We're reading this within our reading series, and the kids will learn about differences between the country and the city. I teach first, though - not sure what level you're looking for.

Google pictures of each, print them off and have students compare/contrast and record differences and similarities. Check your library for books set in those communities. "Little House" by Virginia Burton is a great book to compare rural and urban. Suburban is harder, but try Discovery Education or YouTube for videos or pictures to help students see the differences. One you identify the attributes of each, students can identify a type of community they would like to live in and why.
