My principal is requiring that we read a professional book over the summer and report on it in September. Any suggestions about books you have read and found very helpful? Thanks!

No More I'm Done, about writing in the primary grades by J. Jacobson. Very readable.

Our principal has asked us to read Never Work Harder Than Your Students...it looks like it is going to be a good read.

But my p could never REQUIRE it! I'm surprised by that- is that common in many districts? And does your district purchase the book that you choose to read? Just wondering!

Yes, they can.

In my district, they can do pretty much whatever they want because we have lost our collective bargaining rights except for salary.

My principal offered a bunch of titles from our professional library that the school had paid for, but I want to read something that I know I can use so am willing to purchase my own copy.

Would love to hear some more titles that 2nd grade teachers have found worthwhile.

Thanks!

I went to these two PD workshops at our Service Center. We all received copies of these books.

Read something to further what I already am doing in my class.

Like readers workshop, daily 5, math centers, common core and workshop approach.

Number Talk is my suggestion if you are looking for something related to math. It focuses on building number sense and mental math strategies. It's excellent and comes with a DVD of classroom clips.

Gretchen Owocki's Common Core for Reading and Common Core for WRiting (separate books from Heinemann about $30.00 each) are excellent reading if you are a CCSS state.
She gives ideas for each grade K-5 on how to implement the Common Core in reading and writing. EXCELLENT resources!
