Best not-a-Mac laptop?

My MacBook Air is 5 years old and dying slowly. I’d love to buy a MacBook Pro, but don’t want to spend the money.

I do a lot of writing on it, so the keyboard needs to be comfortable to use. I probably need 16GB. (I have 8GB on my current Air and that doesn’t seem like enough.)

Any suggestions for a more affordable laptop?

I love my Lenovo Thinkpad ($600). I've had all kinds of HPs and Dells over the years, but I've always just "put up with" them.

I actually like the Thinkpad so much I bought a renewed one via Amazon ($260) to use instead of my school-issued HP laptop..

I was looking at the Thinkpad— that might be a good option. My daughter cleaned up my memory on my Air, so it might work a while longer.

I've had a chromebook for years and it works just fine for my purposes, and was less than $200. The only thing it can't do is scan documents (maybe the newer ones do), but on the rare occasions I've needed that I just bring my work laptop home.
