Clip to ScrapBook #1

Ive posted enough to bore you that my adult son is lazy and my adult daughter is bitchy. But there are moments.

Yesterday I was texting my DD how frantic with worry I am about income taxes. Im pretty sure Im going to be hit hard this year and owe a lot. And this year will be the standard-bearer for my future taxes. And (sorry) when my taxes go back up (last year I had a ton of deductions with selling/buying houses), then my Medicare will triple. I wrote how I hate to spend savings/investment on taxes. Whine, whine, whine.

DD responded,
Quote:
Then dont walk on public streets, use the library, or ever expect emergency services...oh wait. Taxes are awesome and support the wonderful place we live.
When I got done realizing how right she is, how lucky I am to be an American who is privileged to pay taxes, I wrote:
Quote:
What a wise one you are.
She made my day with her reply:
Quote:
I blame the source.
(You, Mom, are my source.)
Thanks for letting me share my attitude adjustment.

That is a good attitude. it was the same one my father-in-law shared when he was still living. You are in good company!

and I know where much of that wisdom came from.

Still I understand your concern about finances. After we retire we become concerned that we could last longer than our funds with constantly increasing costs. I hope all works out well for you.

Do you have taxes withheld from whatever income you have? Maybe that would help with the shock?

Good thinking. I do have it withheld from my pension, and my new tax guy had me increase the amount last year. But my other income is from my rental house that I inherited from my parents—and nothing is taken from that. We’ll see how this year’s return looks (I’m not even close) and maybe I need to increase the pension withholding even more. Thanks, annie.

how I'm not as aware of the monthly withholding of taxes as I am of the lump April tax bill to pay. I think it's the insult to injury of getting a penalty for not guessing correctly how much to have withheld. Sigh.

You daughter is a keeper! Not that you have a choice But she has learned from you. And did share an interesting perspective. I only wish I could designate my tax money into agencies I feel do the most good. I rather like that if my taxes get shared throughout the government, the ones I don't approve of get only a teensy bit of my money.

I expect we should all be grateful for having the money to pay the tax bill along with receiving its benefits.

We had To pay big time last year. Then we even got a penalty. DH is now taking more out. Well see. Your daughter is very wise.

You might want to start paying a quarterly payment on your rental income to spread it out and avoid penalties. I'm sure your accountant can advise on that.

I think your daughters response was good, but even better is that you were able to step back and accept her response.

I understand being nervous about it though. Taxes can be complicated and no one likes surprises when paying money is involved.

If you owe taxes, you don't get hacked for a fake refund. No one hacks us to PAY our taxes.

We can see parts of ourselves in them. The impact we made that they still remember or hang onto!
