Does any one have a successful way they teach writing to their second graders? I would like to improve in this, but I want to get the students to enjoy writing.

There are lots of writing programs out there, but I have found there are important basics that need to be in everyone's writing workshop:

1. The use of a planner or graphic organizer that fits with every genre you teach. I use one I found from Writing A-Z.
2. Write in front of your kids and model, model, model. They love to see your work!
3. Ask, "What did you see me do today that you can do in your writing?"
4. Use mentor text. Find one important piece of literature for each genre you teach to "notice and note" what the author does that they can use in their writing.

A great professional book to read is Regie Routman's "Writing Essentials".

We haved used WritersWorkshop. They write from what they already know, you use mentor texts and lots of modeling. You can buy Lucy Calkins Nuts and Bolts of WW. It's a boxed set of what you need.
