Clip to ScrapBook #1

I am trying to make home work folders, but they are more review folders than home work. I teach pull out SPED reading and math and I am trying to make home work type folders for my students. I want to include sight word review, touch math numbers, and take home books. The thing is, should I only send them home once a week and have them returned to me on fridays? or should I go through the folders everyday? I only have so much time with the students, So i was thinking collect them on Friday, stuff them with new review materials and send them home on monday?

If they are elementary and maybe even middle school, I'd opt for daily. They will not remember it by Friday.

High school students will claim they forgot too, but it will be easier to just hold them accountable. As I type this, you can enforce it will middle school as well. They need to learn the skill.

I don't have a lot of experience working with the really young ones. Hopefully some of the primary teachers will chime in.

I don't do homework

I don't do homework because I don't think it is appropriate for my students (K-2 primary intellectually disabled) although I do post play and review ideas on my Facebook page for parents to use. However, our intermediate units send homework packets weekly but they go home on Friday afternoons. The students don't get graded on it but if they bring it back anytime the following week, they get treasure box or something similar. I think you could make the weekly thing work. I can't imagine trying to do it daily.

I quit sending home homework because literally less than 10% of my kids brought it back. My para would spend at least an hour getting everything ready on Mondays, and with such a low rate of return I'd rather her spend that hour working with students. Punishing kids for not bringing it back didn't seem fair because at such a young age (and since they're all struggling students) it's not really their fault that their parent can't or won't help them with the homework. I also feel like my kids work really hard for the 7 hours per day they're in school already and it seems unfair to send additional academic work for kids so young. If parents ask me for extra practice I will send home things like sight word lists and extra books and stress that they need to do the activities with their child (rather than giving the kid a worksheet that I expect to get back).
