PT ads that match a discussed topic, haha

I think we all have had the experience of ads showing up on PT that have to do with something we recently read about. I often see this when people talk about kitchen remodels or ordering from Wayfair.

I'm not sure if it was PT or Facebook, but yesterday someone commented that their cats hated each other. Look what's on my ads today. Who knew this even existed haha?

What are some of the odder ads you have seen that seem triggered by something discussed?

The creepiest time this happened to me was when spouse and I were talking about a specific brand of snow tires we had on one car and buying them for the other car that week. I did not Google them or go on a website about it. An ad showed up for them the next day! Don't tell me our phones aren't listening to us haha!

My husband recently got a prescription for a cpap machine. Then, the next day on my facebook feed there was an ad for a cpap machine cleaner. I didn't search or google anything. The only thing I can think of is that google shared information from his searches that tied to our IP address. Creepy either way.

I was riding with my daughter in her very old jeep. I asked if she was thinking of buying something newer because she will probably have a long commute to a new job.. She said she was, but really wanted another jeep. Later that day we both had jeep adds. We had not searched for jeeps, only talked about them. There is no doubt "they" are listening.

My DD had a really bad anxiety attack on Tuesday. She's been on very low dosage meds since December, and they've worked great, so this came out of the blue, and it was very upsetting. We spent a good chunk of the day on the couch together, trying to work through it.

Yesterday morning, she woke up and started scrolling through her TikTok videos like she always does. TikTok has an algorithm that picks videos for you, based on what you "like". But apparently they also listen to your conversations.

The very first video up was a young guy saying something like, "So you know how TikTok chooses videos for you?" Then the camera zooms in on his face and he says, "So......how was your anxiety attack yesterday? Hmmmm?"

Completely freaked her out.

Oh my! This is all too creepy and unsettling. I get how the google searches can store your info and display ads that match. But just talking about things?

I don't have voice activation turned on, so I don't notice this. Do you think that could be it?

Ruby, that gives me the creeps. And makes me think seriously about listening devices.

I think I'm going to experiment and think of something that would be a surprise if it came up.

Here we go.

I was telling my son about the creepy TikTok ad that mentioned panic attacks. He thought it might be that there is an open Alexa mike in the house if you have an app for Alexa or she mentioned it on fb to a friend. He also said he could care less since he's a full grown adult, but that if he had a young child in the home, he'd google how to delete or control the devices.

I googled about Alexa listening in and found this quote from Amazon. To me, this is just lawyerish talk about why Amazon listens in with the Alexa Echo thingy.

Quote:
For its part, Amazon says it keeps our voice recordings "to learn your voice and how you speak to improve the accuracy of the results provided to you and to improve our services."
By the way, he had panic attacks starting in his late teens and we've also had several cousins with that problem. They can be debilitating. I'm sorry she's having to deal with, but very glad you two have found out early and she can recognize what is happening. Many people think this is a mental problem when it really is a physical condition with side effects that mess with the mind--increased heart rate, shallow breathing, etc that lead one to think they are dying. But you probably know all this. Just wanted to commiserate.
